Shard is an in-game currency used to obtain exotic in-game items from the Shard Merchant (located at spawn). Shard is a global currency—meaning you do not lose it between planet resets and is accessible across all planets. Shards are non-transferrable, meaning you won't be able to transfer your shards to another player's account.
